OxiTop®
Despite all discussions about quicker alternative methods,
the determination of the biological oxygen demand BOD has not become any
less important. On the contrary, it is still one of the most important
measurements for the management of water resources and allows statements
to be made about the loading of waters and wastewater with biodegradable
substances. The importance of the respirometric BOD measurement is also
shown by the inclusion of the “Determination of the biochemical oxygen
demand after n-days (BODn) in a respirometer – extension of the method
according to DIN EN 1899-2 (H55)” as a proposal for a German standard
method in the 46th installment 2000 of the DEV. Criticisms of the
conventional manometric measuring systems have mainly concerned the use of
mercury for measuring the pressure. Mercury is toxic and if not handled
properly it produces vapors which are injurious to health. With the
development of the OxiTop® systems, WTW has fulfilled a worldwide
customer wish – mercury-free BOD determinations. With OxiTop® WTW now
offers a unique and modular mercury-free BOD instrument system which has
been developed for daily practical use. OxiTop® alters the previous
handling process in a revolutionary manner.

Thermostats
- OxiTop®
Box : Is a benchtop model with hinged
clear-view cover which can accommodate a maximum of either 12 OxiTop®
measuring places or 20 Karlsruhe bottles. The chamber is equipped with
a connection for an IS 6 or IS 12 stirrer. A special compartment is
provided for thermostatting 6 methylene blue samples. The box is made
of non-corrosive materials and the compressor is CFC-free. A cross-flow
fan ensures uniform temperature distribution. The box has an automatic
defrosting system with condensate evaporation.
- Thermostat
Cabinets : BOD5 values must be
determined at a constant temperature of 20 °C. If this requirement
cannot be realized at the workplace then a thermostat cabinet in which
the samples can be placed for the duration of the test is required. As
the samples must be additionally stirred the thermostat cabinets are
fitted with internal sockets to provide the stirrers with electricity.
Depending on the thermostat cabinet size up to 48 samples can be
thermostatted simultaneously. Sizes /2 and /4 are available with
transparent insulating glass doors. Alternatively all thermostat
cabinets can be provided with a variable temperature controller, range
+5 ... +40 °C.

Turbidity
If a liquid contains undissolved solids then any light
which passes through the liquid will be both absorbed and scattered. To
our eyes it no longer appears to be clear but turbid. This turbidity may
be caused by mud, algae, microbes and other insoluble particles. The
extent of the turbidity depends primarily on the amount of undissolved
solids; however, the shape, size and composition of the particles
additionally influence the degree of turbidity. A quantitative statement
about the amount of solid in suspension is therefore only possible for
exactly specified samples.
In quality monitoring the ”turbidity” value is an informative quantity
in many applications. This applies to drinking water and wastewater
treatment, for the preparation of beverages and in the electroplating and
petrochemical industry in the chemical sector.
In earlier days the turbidity was determined by simply measuring the light
passing through the liquid. However, measuring the scattered light at an
angle of 90° has proved its superiority, particularly at lower measuring
ranges, and today is recognized throughout the world as being the state of
the art. Instruments which use this method are also sometimes called
nephelometers.
A differentiation can be made between instruments according to their
sources of illumination. While for measurements according to the Standard
methods for the examination of water and wastewater a tungsten wide-band
light source is required, ISO 7027 / DIN EN 27 027 (EN ISO 7027) specifies
an IR-LED (infrared) with a wavelength of 860 nm. Measurements made by
these different instrument types are not comparable. |
|

|
- Portable Turbidity Meter
-
- Battery-operated portable turbidity meter with infrared LED (860 nm)
for measurements according to ISO 7027 / DIN/EN 27 027 (EN ISO 7027)
on a nephelometric basis and with a range of 0 to 1100 NTU. The
AutoRange function switches the measuring range automatically. The 1
to 4-point calibration is very convenient for the operator. Pressing
the CAL key switches the instrument to the calibration mode. The
calibration standards then only need to be inserted one after the
other in a falling sequence. The instrument is powered by 4 micro (AAA)
alkaline manganese batteries which are supplied with the instrument as
are all the other necessary accessories such as calibration standards
(0.02 – 10.0 – 100 and 1000 NTU) and empty cuvettes.
|
|

|
- Laboratory Turbidity Meters
- Turb
550 / Turb 550 IR : Laboratory
turbidity meters for nephelometric measurements with automatic 3-point
calibration, RS 232 output, builtin real-time clock and
calibration interval monitoring. Measuring range selection from
0.01 ... 1000 NTU is carried out automatically and for comparative
measurements the current and previous values can be shown on the
2-line display. Scope of supply: instrument with integral short
operating instructions, accessory case with 2 empty cuvettes, 3
secondary standards (0.02 – 10.0 – 1000 NTU) and cuvettes
cleaning tissue.
- Turb
555 / Turb 555 IR : High-precision
laboratory turbidity meters with a wide measuring range of 0.0001
to 10000 NTU for all turbidity measuring applications from
ultrapure and drinking water measurements, through quality
assurance in the soft drinks industry up to checking wastewater.
The measuring system with its 4 detectors allows not only
nephelometric (90° scatter) measurements and transmission
measurements, but also ratio measurements in which the influences
of stray light and sample color are reduced. The possibility of
displaying the values in EBC units (European Brewing Convention)
means that they are suitable for use in the brewing industry. The
measurements are shown on an illuminated display to ensure good
readability from almost any angle. The resolution of the
measurement can be chosen to suit the particular application. The
menu-guided operator interface easily guides the operator through
the measuring, calibration and configuration procedures.
Comprehensive AQA functions such as monitoring the calibration
interval or password protection for calibration and setup access
help to assure the quality of the measurements and are all also
included in the documentation of the measurements.

Thermoreactors
Thermoreactors, also known as dry thermostats, are
necessary for carrying out chemical digestions, e.g. for COD, total
nitrogen, total phosphorus. They ensure that the digestion is carried out
completely, as they maintain the necessary high reaction temperature
throughout the whole of the defined period. In each of the new
thermoreactors the most important temperatures and digestion times used in
wastewater analysis are stored in easily selected digestion programs, such
as the COD digestion at 148 °C for 2 h. In addition, you can program the
CR 3200 and the CR 4200 to carry out your own individual digestions at
other temperatures. For simultaneous digestions, such as for COD (148 °C)
and total-N (120 °C), the CR 4200 is suited as the two thermoblocks can
be controlled separately.
- CR
2200 : The CR
2200 is the routine instrument for the digestion reactions required
for the analysis of wastewater. All programs can easily be selected. A
well-designed heating system means that the stability and accuracy of
the set temperature are outstanding.
- CR
3200 : The CR
3200 is the thermoreactor for a wide range of applications. Numerous
determinations can be carried out in its 24 openings. The CR 3200 also
impresses with the stability and accuracy of the set temperature
thanks to the well-designed heating system. The temperature can be
freely selected in 1 °C steps between room temperature (25 °C) and
170 °C. As you can enter 8 of your own temperature programs this
means, for example, that you can store a similar program to the short-time
COD determination (DIN 38 409 H43) with a 15 minute digestion at 148
°C as your own program. Test agent monitoring is possible with the CR
3200 by using the TFK CR Thermosensor (recommended accessory).
- CR
4200 : The CR 4200 is ideally suited
if different digestions have to be carried out simultaneously as the
heating blocks can be controlled separately. For example, one heating
block with 12 cuvettes can be used to carry out a COD digestion at 148
°C while the other one is carrying out the total-N digestion at 120
°C with a further 12 cuvettes. The CR 4200 also impresses with the
stability and accuracy of the set temperatures, even when the blocks
are be used at different temperatures, thanks to the well-designed
heating system. The temperature can be freely selected in 1 °C steps
between room temperature (25 °C) and 170 °C. As you can enter 8 of
your own temperature programs this means, for example, hat you can
store a similar program to the short-time COD determination (DIN 38
409 H43) with a 15 minute digestion at 148 °C as your own program.
Quality assurance is possible with the CR 4200 by using the TFK CR
Thermosensor (recommended accessory).
